Botany and production

Pelargonium sidoides, also known as the South African geranium, is a member of the Geraniaceae family and the genus Pelargonium. The plants grow up to around 50 centimetres in height and are found only in South Africa.

Pelargonium sidoides is a shrub-like perennial plant characterised by crowded, greyish-green, heart-shaped leaves. Its distinctive dark, reddish-purple almost black flowers are present almost all year round. It generally grows on grassland on stony soil.

As the plant ages, its roots darken. Once the plants are three years old, the roots contain the optimal amount of active substances for medicinal products. At this stage, they are harvested by hand, sorted and washed. Nowadays, the plants are also grown on specialised farms using organic cultivation methods and in line with Good Agricultural Practice guidelines.

This production method ensures gentle treatment of the valuable roots.

From plant to modern medicine

Once the roots have been washed and dried, they are shipped to Germany. Here they are processed in accordance with strict manufacturing and quality guidelines to ensure they retain the maximum amount of active ingredients. This is particularly important because the optimal therapeutic effect is achieved through the combination of the active ingredients. Marker substances such as polyphenols ensure high batch conformity and guarantee a consistently high quality.

At the end of processing, the final product is a concentrated root extract, the ’special extract’ EPs® 7630, which is the active ingredient of the phytomedicine. It fulfils the internationally required criteria of quality, safety and efficacy for evidence-based medicines and can thus achieve regular full drug marketing authorization.

The quality of a herbal medicinal product is determined by the active ingredient extracted from the medicinal plant. Therefore, only the highest quality roots grown in organic cultivation processes on controlled plantations are selected.

To obtain only pure raw materials, the production process is subject to continuous monitoring and control.
The result of years of experience in developing and manufacturing phytopharmaceuticals has produced a highly effective and well-tolerated medication that has been extensively tested in clinical trials in accordance with statutory requirements.

Did you know?

In phytomedicine often the roots are of medicinal value, because the roots are the plants’ major system for providing nutrients.
